The void behind a bright life

On what basis do we make our career choices? Probably our likings, skills, dreams or maybe most importantly parental expectations and guidance or the influence of the outside world. This is the beginning of the journey of your identity fixation with who you are. And in no time we are found saying or feeling, everything is going well still why do I feel like this? Why do all my efforts and integrity that is paying well and look bright still feel like a void? Why am I still facing those moments of being lost in between the busy hustle bustle?

Have you been experiencing this?

You do not have a strategy problem or a business choice problem. You have an alignment crisis. And almost no mentor of yours would be able to address it.

If we in our tender age had the liberty to follow our inner calling, life would have been on a very different trajectory.

Why misalignment happens

So why misalignment? Hence we succumb to the social influence, the material pressure, we apply our skills and mindset at the stake. We master our identities and roles. But we miss the centre quality we are meant to live and the energy flowing through that. This quality association and identity formation fragments our life into a few pieces. We are not living the whole. We can neither build, hold nor receive whole. This is the result of misalignment that we have created for ourselves and others as well.

The misalignment no one names

Now the misaligned industry is being built with full passion and zest. And soon a day comes when we begin to speak about the founder burnout. Which is not a failure of strategy nor a failure of any coping mechanisms. The problem is deeper, underneath, we do not talk about or maybe we do not want to look into at all. It lies between the role you are performing and the human being you actually are. This humanness of yours is not loud, it lives in quiet undercurrents and hence it silently appears on the surface on tired days. They also appear on days you cherish your victories with your team or leave you with a feeling of loneliness at the top. And you start questioning everything once again.

This is why “why do I feel lost as a founder?” is such a common, unspoken search. It is not a weakness. It is information. It is the part of you the company cannot see, asking to be met.

The role is not the enemy

Let me be clear here, the role is real and it is not the problem. Building a company is a worthy thing and you do not need to walk away from it. The only trouble is that the role has slowly moved to the centre of your life and pushed the person in you to the edge. A life, and a company, built only from a role carries a quiet ceiling. It can take you only as far as the role itself can reach.

So the work is not to abandon anything. The work is to change what sits at the centre. When your essence, that one quality you are uniquely here to live, sits at the centre, it begins to express itself outward. Through the company, through the way you lead, through the people you are building alongside. The company then becomes one of the ways you live your essence, rather than the thing you disappear into. The same company, led from essence and not from identity, holds a completely different ceiling. And the founder leading it slowly stops feeling lost, because they are no longer trying to be a role. They are simply being a person who happens to be building something.

A different first question

Most founders ask, what should this company become? It is the right question, eventually. But it is not the first one. The first one is older and quieter, who am I, underneath all this?

You do not have to answer it all at once. You only have to stop ignoring it. Protect a little stillness each day, even when it feels unproductive, especially then. Keep one or two relationships that see you from beneath the title. And when success arrives and still feels strangely empty, do not rush past that feeling. It is pointing you toward the part of yourself your work can never reach.

The most important work you will ever do

That quiet misalignment you have been carrying is not a flaw in you. It is the beginning of the most important work you will ever do, the work of leading, and living, from who you actually are. I have watched it begin, in founder after founder. And it can begin in you too.
